Liga MX vs MLS: What's the Difference?

Published

If you live in Texas, or anywhere in the US con raíces mexicanas, you live between two leagues. MLS is on your doorstep. Liga MX is in your blood. So what is actually different? El Tío breaks it down, sin favoritismos... okay, con un poquito.

The format. MLS runs one long season with conferences and a playoff at the end. Liga MX runs two short tournaments a year, each with its own champion and its own liguilla. Two chances at glory, two chances at heartbreak. Here is how the Liga MX season actually works.

The passion. No disrespect to MLS, it has grown a lot and the atmospheres are real now. But Liga MX carries a century of history, clásicos that split families, and a fan culture that treats the team like an extension of the apellido. MLS is a great night out. Liga MX is a family obligation. Both are worth your time, but they hit different.

The talent flow. For years the best Mexican players went to Europe or stayed in Liga MX, and MLS was where careers wound down. That is changing, MLS is younger and hungrier now, and the two leagues fight over the same fans on this side of the border. The Leagues Cup even throws them in the ring together, which settles nothing and starts everything.

The real answer. You do not have to choose, nephew. Watch your MLS team on the weekend and your Liga MX team like your life depends on it. But if you grew up hearing "vamos a ver el partido" in Spanish, you already know which one is home. Which Liga MX team should you support?
