HOW TO PICK A LIGA MX TEAM (FOR PEOPLE WHO GREW UP HERE)

Published . Updated

Listen, nephew. El Tío loves this game. All of it. The good teams, the bad teams, the ones that break your heart every year on purpose. And El Tío's a Rayados man, that's my blood, but that's not the point today.

The point is you. You're 23, you watch the games with your compas, you scream when everybody screams, and when they ask you who you support, you go quiet. You don't have a team. And a man who loves fútbol without a team is like a man at a party who won't dance. Sad. Fixable.

Sit down. El Tío's gonna give you one.

You don't choose the team. Usually the team chooses you.

Here's the truth, nephew. Most people don't pick their team. The team gets handed to them. And there's really only four ways it happens:

Your dad gave it to you. The classic. You were three years old in a jersey you didn't choose, and now it's part of who you are. That's not a preference, that's inheritance.

You rebelled. Your dad's an Américanista, so you went and picked Chivas just to start something at the dinner table. El Tío won't lie, he finds this funny. And a little bit beautiful.

You caught them at the top. The first time you really watched, they were winning everything, and that golden era stuck to you forever. Nothing wrong with that. A first love is a first love.

You liked the jersey. Come on. Some of you picked your team because the kit looked clean, and you know who you are. El Tío's not judging. Beauty is a reason too.

The Big Four (everybody's got an opinion on these)

Now, if the team hasn't picked you yet, El Tío's gonna walk you through the ones everybody argues about. The big four. And nephew, whichever one you land on, somebody at the party is gonna have something to say.

América. The most successful club in Mexico, and the most hated, and they love it. Their slogan might as well be “hate me more.” If you pick América, know that half the room is against you before you say a word. Some people live for that.

Chivas. The most Mexican team there is, only Mexican players, ever. The people's club. If your heart is in your roots, this is the one. Just know they'll break it. Often.

Cruz Azul. Ah, La Máquina. El Tío has a soft spot here, because Cruz Azul is the team that teaches you how to suffer. For years “Cruzazulear” literally meant to lose from a winning position. If you like pain with your fútbol, welcome home.

Pumas. The university team. The different one. Pumas fans will tell you it's about more than trophies, and honestly, they have to, because the trophies don't come often. But there's romance in that.

And don't forget the North

El Tío's people. Two clubs from Monterrey that the rest of Mexico can't ignore anymore.

Rayados. El Tío's team, so take this with a grain of salt, or don't, it's true anyway. Monterrey. Blue and white. Serious club, serious money, serious fans.

Tigres. The other side of Monterrey. The Clásico Regio against Rayados is one of the best in the country right now, and if you've never seen it, you're missing the loudest fútbol in México.

Which Liga MX team should you support if you're starting fresh?

Rule number one: you can inherit. If your family already has a team, that is your team. Done. You do not shop around for a new apellido, and you do not shop around for a new club. If abuelo was América and dad was América, you are América, even when they break your heart. That is not a choice, that is a birthright.

If you are starting fresh, start with the city. Fútbol in Mexico is local pride made loud. Are your people from Jalisco? Then it is Chivas or Atlas, and that choice will define family dinners forever. From Monterrey? Rayados or Tigres, pick a side, there is no middle. From the border, San Diego side? Xolos was made for you. From Mexico City? América, Cruz Azul, or Pumas, and each one says something different about you.

Then pick by who you are. Want the winner everybody loves to hate? América. Want to prove your loyalty by suffering beautifully? Cruz Azul. Want puro orgullo mexicano, players born in México only? Chivas. Want the university team that earns it instead of buying it? Pumas. Want the border club that crosses two countries every weekend? Xolos. Want the eternal underdog who finally won and made grown men cry? Atlas.

El Tío's rules for picking

Okay, nephew. If none of the four ways happened to you, and you have to choose with your own two hands, here are El Tío's rules.

Pick for your family. If somebody in your blood already loves a team, that's a real reason. Fútbol is better shared.

Pick for your city. Feel connected to where your people are from? Let that guide you. Monterrey, Guadalajara, Mexico City, the club carries the place.

Pick for how they play. Watch a few games. Some teams play beautiful, some play ugly and win. Find what moves you.

The one wrong answer: picking a team because they are winning right now. Nephew, bandwagon is not a personality. Teams go up, teams go down, and the whole point is that you stay. Pick one and suffer with it. That is the deal, that is the fun, that is fútbol.

But never, ever, pick because they're winning right now.

And if your two primos still can't sit at the same table, read the Clásico Nacional, explained. El Tío laid out the whole pleito.

And when the afición starts singing and you don't catch a word of it, El Tío already wrote you the Liga MX slang. Learn it before the next cascarita.

Once you have your colors, learn the calendar and the pleitos: how Liga MX actually works, every clásico explained, and where to watch from this side of the border.

That last one matters, so El Tío's gonna say it loud:

PICK ONE. LIVE WITH IT. SUFFER FOR IT. AND NEVER SWITCH BECAUSE THEY WON A TROPHY. THAT'S NOT A FAN, NEPHEW. THAT'S A TOURIST.

Now go. You've got a team to find.

Quick answers

How do I pick a Liga MX team?

Most people don't pick. The team gets handed to them by family, rebellion, a golden era, or even a clean jersey. If you have to choose yourself, pick for family, city, or playing style. Never pick because they're winning right now.

Which Liga MX team should a beginner support?

Start with the big four: América, Chivas, Cruz Azul, or Pumas. Or look north to Rayados and Tigres. Pick the one that feels like your story, then stay with it.

Can you switch Liga MX teams?

El Tío says no. Pick one, live with it, suffer for it, and never switch because they won a trophy. That's not a fan. That's a tourist.
